Work by the University of Aberdeen's Just Transition Lab has contributed to ambitious recommendations in the Committee on Climate Change's latest Carbon Budget which sets out the route for the UK to reach net zero by 2050.
The Lab’s rapid evidence assessment and a report on measuring just transition are cited in the UK’s Seventh Carbon Budget which outlines a strategy to accelerate the country’s energy transition and drive down emissions while delivering economic benefits, energy security and long-term savings for businesses and households.
The Committee visited Aberdeen in October where members of the Just Transition Lab presented their research on regional developments and hosted workshops with energy workers and the industry at the University’s Science Teaching Hub.
The addition of Aberdeen case study into the Carbon Budget underscored the need to consider the impacts of climate action on the workforce and communities.
The Just Transition Lab is an interdisciplinary research group at the University of Aberdeen. The Lab is supporting the Just Transition Commission in research on regional planning for the north-east. This builds on the past research the lab has published on how the oil and gas sector shaped the region and how to measure Just Transition in the north-east of Scotland.
