The University of Aberdeen has hosted a meeting of GB Energy organised by the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), bringing together renewable energy stakeholders from across the region.
GB Energy’s chair Juergen Maier and board member Helen Hasson were at the Sir Duncan Rice Library at the University’s Old Aberdeen campus to engage with a range of sector organisations, hear about developments in renewable energy and discuss opportunities that GB Energy can bring.
Professor John Underhill, director of the University of Aberdeen’s Centre for Energy Transition, said: “It was a pleasure to help convene, host and present at the roundtable. The University has a long history of delivering interdisciplinary research and innovative solutions that evaluate and address current and future energy challenges including offshore wind, carbon storage, geothermal energy and use of hydrogen.
“The depth, breadth and interdisciplinary nature of the research and training we undertake makes us exceedingly well placed to help support GB Energy, policymakers and other relevant stakeholders as the UK decarbonises industry and its energy systems and transitions to clean, sustainable, green, renewable energy sources.”
Led by AREG, the roundtable included representatives from Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, the Net Zero Technology Centre, bp, Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm, Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, Floatation Energy, Robert Gordon University, Correen Hills wind farm and Hill of Fare wind farm.
Professor Peter Edwards, Vice-Principal Regional Engagement, said: “The Aberdeen city region provides a wealth of knowledge and experience, a world-leading technical, commercial and academic skills base, and an expert supply chain honed over 50 years as Europe’s energy capital that is vital for delivering the energy transition.
“We are delighted to have been able to host this roundtable and to be part of the constructive dialogue taking the energy sector forward. We look forward to working closely with both Great British Energy and industry partners in the months and years ahead.”
