New Publication: HPV testing should be included in staging for some head and neck cancers

Professor Lesley Anderson is delighted to be part of this large multi-centre study and to have the work published in the European Journal of Cancer.

Oropharyngeal cancer incidence is increasing with human papillomavirus (HPV) linked to the rise. P16 has been suggested as a marker of HPV status but does not capture all cases. This multicentre study highlights that survival is substantially better in HPV positive oropharyngeal cancers and that testing for HPV should be included in cancer staging.

Here’s the link to the paper: TNM 8 staging system beyond p16: Double HPV/p16 status is superior to p16 alone in predicting outcome in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma
