Katya Krylova gives 2024 Ingeborg Bachmann Centre Biennial Lecture

On Wednesday 30th October, Dr Katya Krylova (LLMVC Senior Lecturer in German, Film and Visual Culture) gave the 2024 Ingeborg Bachmann Centre Biennial Lecture in London.

Dr Krylova was invited to give the 2024 Biennial Lecture of the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for Austrian Literature and Culture, University of London. The lecture is held once every two years.

Katya Krylova spoke on the topic of ‘Depicting Austria's Wartime History for a Worldwide Audience: Terence Malick's “A Hidden Life”’. She offered an analysis of the film’s fictionalised depiction of the life of Austrian conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter (1907-1943), who was executed in 1943 for his refusal to serve in the Wehrmacht and beatified by the Catholic Church in 2007. Her focus was on what is both gained and lost in Malick’s transnational cinematic portrayal.

Katya extends her thanks to the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre for the honour of giving this lecture, and to all who attended the lecture at Senate House, London, for a lively and stimulating discussion.
