Workshop highlights how to turn humanities subjects into rewarding careers

Senior school pupils across the north of Scotland are being offered the chance to see how their social subjects and humanities classes translate into careers, with help from the University of Aberdeen.

The Humanities Showcase on 13 November will cover a wide range of topics, from the politics of hope, contemporary issues in law and climate change to psychology in the workplace, how linguistics make the world a better place, conflict and reconciliation in the arts – and more.

A special event targeted at S5 and S6 students, it will draw on the expertise of academics from across the University’s Schools of Social Science, Business, Law, Psychology; Divinity, History, Philosophy & Art History; and Language, Literature, Music & Visual Culture.

Dr Sally Middleton, Access and Articulation Manager, said: “The humanities encompass a diverse range of academic fields but it can be tricky to see how studying some of the subjects at Higher level and beyond can translate into long-term rewarding careers.

“Our hope with this showcase is to bring some of the specialisms and connected jobs to life and highlight the routes that will allow young people to turn the subjects they love into lifelong careers.”

The event is open to pupils attending schools in Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands.

It runs from 10am to 3pm at Elphinstone Hall, King’s College Campus, Aberdeen. Places are limited and placed can be booked here.
