The University of Aberdeen's Professor Alex Kemp is one of 45 outstanding social scientists welcomed as new Fellows by the Academy of Social Sciences.
The professor of Petroleum economics has published over 200 papers and books, has served on energy advisory groups for the UK and Scottish Government and authored “the Official History of North Sea Oil and Gas”.
He is among researchers spanning a range of areas including urban governance and public policy, health technology assessment, hunger and food insecurity, migration and forced displacement, and international law awarded Fellowships this autumn.

Their substantial contributions to social science and wider society have furthered our understanding of the social and environmental factors related to population health, changing cultures of inequality, children and young people’s experiences of gaming and gambling, the importance of diversity and inclusion in organisations, and how businesses can contribute to the sustainable development goals, amongst many others. We look forward to working with them to further promote the important role the social sciences play in our daily lives.”
The Academy’s Fellowship comprises 1,600 leading social scientists from academia, the public, private and third sectors. All Academy Fellows are elected for their excellence in their fields and their substantial contributions to social science for public benefit. Selection is through an independent peer review which recognises their excellence and impact.
Professor Kemp, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE), was awarded OBE in 2006 for services to the oil and gas industries and are recipient of theSociety of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Lifetime Achievement Award, said: “It is an honour to be recognised for my contribution to social sciences.
“It is extremely humbling to be recognised by your peers for contributions to your chosen field, and I am delighted to join the Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences alongside many others making a difference by addressing some of the major challenges facing communities, society, places, and economies.”
