Professor Gearoid Millar has been awarded a Personal Research Fellowship by The Royal Society of Edinburgh in recognition of his exceptional research project, entitled ‘21st Century Peace Work: Facing Complex Challenges’.
Against the backdrop of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine two years later, the proliferation of AI systems, and the genocide in Gaza in 2023, the project considers how ‘peace industry’ actors can develop new approaches to the structures and patterns of peace-building.
The world is changing rapidly. This has always been true but recent events have nonetheless caught many off-guard. The strain on institutions tasked with promoting and maintaining security, stability, and peace is evident.
The project will run from January 20, 2025 to January 19, 2026, and will consider the current challenges facing institutions and actors with a focus on peace, security, and stability.
