University of Aberdeen to host interdisciplinary international Workshop

This month, Professor Nadia Kiwan of the University of Aberdeen and Dr Jim Wolfreys of King's College London will host the Islamophobia Beyond Borders Workshop

From Monday 22nd to Wednesday 24th of July, Professor Nadia Kiwan of the University of Aberdeen and Dr Jim Wolfreys of King's College London will host the Islamophobia Beyond Borders Workshop, to discuss the international context, repercussions, and consequences of contemporary Islamophobia. Discussion will take place in the form of round table panels, taking place in the University of Aberdeen's landmark Sir Duncan Rice Library. 

Speakers and participants will come from Paris, London, Glasgow, Lille, Edinburgh, Strasbourg, Leicester, and as far as New York to present their papers and discuss the manifestations and impacts of Islamophobia. 

Speakers include, but are not limited to Zara Mohammed (Muslim Council of Britain), Salman Sayyid (University of Leeds), Mame-Fatou Niang (Carnegie Mellon University), and Fraser McQueen (University of Bristol).

Members of the public and interested parties are also welcome to participate in most of the events. 

Topics include, but are not limited to: 

  • ‘Gendered islamophobia as an indicator of the French hegemonic order’ - Hanane Karimi
  • ‘Dire prophecies: Race and conspiracism in the history of Islamophobia’ - Reza Zia-Ebrahimi
  • ‘Scottish exceptionalism and Islamophobia’ - Peter Hopkins
  • ‘Flatland Islamophobia’ - AbdoolKarim Vakil

There will also be the public launch of Julien Talpin's Book La France, tu l’aimes mais tu la quittes, on Tuesday 23/07/2024.
