Landmark endometriosis study led by University of Aberdeen

Professor Abdel-Fattah wrote: Congratulations to Prof(s) Cooper and Bhattacharya from Aberdeen Centre for Women’s Health Research (ACWHR) and their research team for completing a land mark endometriosis study led by University of Aberdeen and funded by the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) program – NIHR . The study has recently been published in the prestigious BMJ journal. Very well done.

Our Research Fellow Dr Nanak Bhagat wrote: In their article, Cooper K, Bhattacharya S et al evaluate the effectiveness of postsurgical hormonal treatment in preventing recurrence of endometriosis related pain. The PRE-EMPT randomised control trial was conducted across 34 UK hospitals. 405 eligible women were randomised to receive either long-acting progesterone (LAP) (depot medroxy progesterone acetate or LNG-IUS) or combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP).

The results of this trial show that prescribing either LAP or COCP is equally effective in reducing pain three years after endometriosis surgery, but women using LAP’s were less likely to require further surgery and second-line treatments.
