The Aberdeen Centre for Women's Health Research (ACWHR) 6th Anniversary and International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 celebrations took place on Monday 4th March. The programme included the inaugural Sohinee Bhattacharya Memorial lecture which commemorated our late colleague. ACWHR were joined by staff and students across the University and NHS colleagues in the MacGillivray Centre of the Maternity Hospital and online.
Professor Bhattacharya, Head of School and Dugald Baird Chair opened the event and we were joined by three inspiring guest speakers. Dr Yin Ling Woo, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Malaya spoke on the ROSE foundation and the excellent work it is doing to prevent cervical cancer. Dr Heather Morgan, Dean for Enterprise and Innovation and Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, spoke about the FutureLearn course on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) which aims to educate frontline professionals where there is a lack of training across sectors. Professor Wendy Graham, Professor of Obstetric Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicineand Emeritus Professor at the University of Aberdeengave the touching Inaugural Dr Sohinee Bhattacharya memorial lecture, which looked at social obstetrics and its increasing importance, a topic very close to Sohinee’s heart. All our guest speakers gave very insightful talks and were well received by all.
Our director, Professor Abdel-Fattah gave a talk on two decades of leadership by the University of Aberdeen in pelvic floor disorder research and Dr Mairead Black, senior clinical lecturer and member of ACWHR, spoke on where we stand as a centre and our future aspirations.
On behalf of ACWHR we would like to thank our wonderful guest speakers and all of our attendees for making the day such a success!
The event was recorded and will be shared shortly on the ACWHR webpage. Until then you can contact kelly.gray@abdn.ac.uk for the link to the recording.
