School of Geosciences welcomes Aberdeenshire geography teachers to campus

The School of Geosciences recently hosted a group of 23 geography teachers from secondary schools across Aberdeenshire.

Our guests joined several undergraduate geography classes, including a physical geography laboratory class and a lecture on globalisation, across various teaching locations on campus.

They were also able to attend a showcase of facilities that support geology teaching in the Science Teaching Hub.  Along with a demonstration of the University’s bespoke tool V3Geo, which is used to study virtual geological outcrops from around the world, guests were able to observe various rock and mineral samples using our polarizing microscopes.

Productive discussions took place between various School of Geosciences staff members and our guests about how mutually beneficial relationships between geography teachers and the University-based geographical and wider geosciences community could be developed.

Rhian Owen, a geography teacher at Kemnay Academy, said of the day: “we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to campus today.   It was great to get the opportunity to meet with staff, visit the labs and see what the University has to offer.  We are looking forward to working with the School of Geosciences and the wider University more in the future.”

The School of Geosciences looks forward to working closely to co-develop field and lab experiences for secondary pupils across the region in the months and years to come.  If you work at a secondary school and are interested in learning more about the School of Geosciences please contact geosciences-outreach@abdn.ac.uk
