EU funding awarded to two Geography & Environment projects

Two Geography and Environment-led projects have been awarded funding from the EU INTERACT (International Network for Terrestrial Research and Monitoring in the Arctic) programme, and will commence their investigations into Arctic palaeoclimate and glacier dynamics in summer 2013.

Dr. Brice Rea and Dr. Matteo Spagnolo, of the Cryosphere and Climate Change group, and palaeoecologists Professor Kevin Edwards and Dr. Ed Schofield, have been funded by the EU INTERACT programme for the project FareoICE - "Palaeoclimate of the Faroe Islands during the Late Glacial determined from palaeoglaCiological and palaeoEcological proxies." Fieldwork for the project will be undertaken on the Faroe Islands in summer 2013.

Dr. Robert Bingham, also of the Cryosphere and Climate Change group, has also been awarded EU INTERACT funding for the geophysical project "LARGE" - "Laser Scanning of Arctic Region Glacial Environments." For this project Bingham will join colleagues Dr. Jonathan Carrivick and Dr. Duncan Quincey (University of Leeds) and Dr. David Rippin (University of York) on geophysical fieldwork near to Abisko, Arctic Sweden, in summer 2013. Bingham's involvement is also funded by the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.
