Kalina Doncheva left her home and family in Bulgaria, travelling more than 1,500 miles to study at the University of Aberdeen.
Struggles with homesickness and her health led to challenges along the way, but she’s proud to be graduating from the University with a Law degree.
“When I began my journey at the University of Aberdeen, I had to travel thousands of kilometres from my home country alone. I was overwhelmed and stressed, unsure of how I would be able to complete all my assignments.
“I missed my family and being so far away made me even more anxious. It wasn't long before I fell ill due to all the stress I was experiencing.
“However, things started to look up when I met a friend who would become my life companion. I also got to know many other friendly students, and we quickly became close friends. We supported each other through everything and our friendships grew stronger as time passed.”
The friendships Kalina made during her studies were invaluable – as were the facilities available on campus, providing her with a calm and peaceful place to work.
“One place that always helped me clear my mind and concentrate was the Taylor Library. It became my refuge.
“Despite the health setbacks I faced due to stress, I persevered and completed all my courses with grades I’m proud of.”
Despite the challenges she faced, Kalina decided to make the most of student life and was a member of two societies during her time at the University.
“As a member of both the Mooting Society and the Commercial Law Society, I gained invaluable expertise in legal proceedings and the art of persuasive discourse. Through my connection with three committee members, I also acquired an understanding of the inner workings of these societies and the essential skills needed for successful mooting.
“And my love of singing and song writing inspired me to pursue a specialisation in intellectual property. The prospect of safeguarding my own creative works and helping others protect their artistic endeavours ignited a passion within me for this field of study.”
Kalina is proud of all the challenges she’s overcome and is looking forward to using what she learned throughout her studies and making meaningful contributions in the field of Law going forward.
“I am proud of the obstacles I have overcome and the effort I made to arrive at this momentous occasion.
“Looking back on my time at the University, I realise everything was worth it. I learned that I should never give up and that failure is a steppingstone to success. I am grateful to the University for allowing me to be a part of such a magical place, and I will always cherish the memories and friendships I made here.”
