Aberdeen University companies pick up major Government awards

A new spot test for the rapid identification of micro-organisms such as E-coli, and a new, improved surgical nail used to repair broken bones will be developed by two University of Aberdeen companies thanks to a Government award scheme.

Microbiological and chemical service company NCIMB Ltd and bio-medical devices research and development company Aubec R&D Ltd have both been awarded £45,000 by the Scottish Office’s SMART scheme.

Scientists at NCIMB will develop a prototype test device for the rapid detection and identification of micro-organisms such as salmonella, E.coli and listeria. The user-friendly diagnostic test kits will be used for application in the medical, water and food industries.

NCIMB Development Officer Dr David Glover said they expect to develop the prototype within the year, following which they will apply for additional funding to complete the project.

“The test kit will work along the same lines as a home pregnancy kit, allowing people to carry out on-the-spot tests for the detection of these deadly bugs. This SMART award is very exciting as it gives NCIMB the potential to open up major new international opportunities.”

The second award to Aubec R&D Ltd is for the development of a new removable device for repairing broken bones. Technically known as a ‘retractable intermedullary nail’, it could bring significant benefits to modern surgery and patient care.

Leading the research is Professor David Hukins of the University’s Department of Bio-medical Physics and Bio-Engineering.

He said: “In over 95% of cases there are no problems, but sometimes the surgeon has to remove the nail at a later stage which is difficult, expensive and carries risks for the patient.

“The SMART award will help Aubec R&D to make the breakthrough to produce a nail which can be removed easily and safely.”

SMART aims to help small businesses improve their competitiveness by developing new products and processes to the benefit of the national economy. The maximum award made is £45,000.
