A Unique Opportunity to Hear Christopher Stembridge playing an 18th Century Organ
The internationally known virtuoso Christopher Stembridge will visit Aberdeen from his home in Italy on Saturday, 6th May to perform on harpsichord and on an 18th century organ.
This rare celebrity recital will take place in St. Mary’s, Carden Place at 7:45 pm. Tickets are available at the Aberdeen Box Office and cost £6.00 (£4.00 concession). Members of the Concerts Supporters scheme will receive free admission.
Christopher Stembridge will be performing music by J S Bach, Frescobaldi and Mozart, and will play on an 18th century Samuel Green organ with a fascinating history. The organ was built by Samuel Green (1740-1786), a London-based organ builder who built organs for Canterbury, Rochester and Salisbury cathedrals as well as many churches and was the finest organ builder of his day. The organ was gifted to St. Mary’s in 1946 after the church’s original organ was destroyed when the church was bombed during the war.
St. Mary’s Carden Place has a long history with the University. The former rector of St. Mary’s is currently working towards a PhD at the University, the University Alumni Michael Mappin (now a Classical FM presenter) was organist at St. Mary’s, as well as two other alumni of the University. Dr. David Smith, Assistant Director of University Music, is currently the organist at St. Mary’s.
