Postgraduate Conference Opens Today

Postgraduates from 13 departments and research centres in the university's Faculty of Social Sciences and Law will gather together today and tomorrow (Thursday 13th and Friday 14th July) in St. Mary's, University of Aberdeen for a conference entitled 'Time, Space and Power'.

Around 20 research papers will be presented by PhD and MPhil students and staff will lead seminars and workshops on the postgraduate experience. These will include a mock viva, performed by Prof. Andrew Blaikie, Dr. Chris Wright and Mr. Mike Hepworth from Sociology. A keynote speech will be given by Gordon Graham FRSE, Regius Professor of Moral Philosophy at Aberdeen. He will talk on 'Globalisation and Cultural Diversity.'

Mr. Christopher Bear, a Geography postgraduate said: “This conference acts as a showcase for the quality of postgraduate research and as evidence for a vibrant postgraduate community at Aberdeen. The diversity of papers being presented - on topics from football hooliganism to salmon management to the Egyptian banking industry - demonstrates the wide-ranging relevance and scope of the research carried out at Aberdeen.”
