A week of exciting science for 8 to 12 year olds with an emphasis on “fun” and “hands-on” is planned for the week of 31st July – 4th August at the University of Aberdeen’s Engineering Department.
Over 30 youngsters will be taking part in an assortment of varied science activities from 0930 – 1500 and will attain a BAYS (British Association Young Scientist) award by the end of the week. The Day Camp, entitled the Investigator Camp, is now in its seventh year.
On Monday morning (31st July), Dr Peter MacConnell of the Engineering department will be running an activity with the children on waste management as part of 'What a load of Rubbish' – a closer look into waste and recycling.
Tuesday morning (1st August ) will see the children in the Zoology department completing a museum trail around the Zoology museum
On Wednesday morning (2nd August), they will be in the Chemistry laboratories with activities called 'Test the fruit' (measuring the vitamin C content of various fruits) and 'All Mixed Up' (using simple chemistry to unsort mixtures).
On Thursday (3rd August), the day will be spent in the countryside during an all-day field trip to Bennachie.
Morning activities on Friday, 4th August will be 'In the Web Room' exploring the new SCOTI (Science Club on the Internet) site - set up jointly between the British Association for the Advancement of Science and Dr Jim McDonald of the University’s Plant & Soil Science Department – which will be launched in June, 2000.
The week will conclude on Friday afternoon with a 'Magic Tricks show' followed by an Awards presentation in the Fraser Noble Building at 2.45 p.m.
