University of Aberdeen Vice-Principal to Take Up Major Post in London

TProfessor Graeme Catto, Vice-Principal at the University of Aberdeen, has been appointed Vice-Principal and Dean of the Guy’s, Kings’ College and St Thomas’s Hospitals Medical and Dental School. Professor Catto takes up his new post on 1 October 2000.

A native of Aberdeen, Professor Catto has been Vice-Principal at the University of Aberdeen since 1995 and Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics since 1988. In 1997, he was appointed Chief Scientist at the Scottish Executive, Department of Health and, since last year, he as been Chairman of the Education Committee of the General Medical Council.

Professor Catto said: “I welcome the opportunity to contribute to the academic and clinical development of King’s College London and the Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical and Dental School. The challenge is to ensure that King’s and its associated NHS partners continue to be regarded as leaders not only within the UK but internationally.”

Principal of the University of Aberdeen, Professor Duncan Rice, is delighted for Professor Catto and congratulated him on his appointment: “Whilst we will miss his presence on the Senior Management Team, we all wish him well in this exciting and challenging new post. Professor Catto is an excellent and dedicated servant of the University of Aberdeen and we have so much to thank him for during his long career. He carries all our good wishes for success.”

Professor Catto has been involved with academic medicine in a distinguished career spanning 30 years. Following gradation from the University of Aberdeen in 1969, he took up the post of House Officer at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. In 1970, he was appointed as a Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen, rising to become Reader in Medicine. From 1988-1992, he was Coordinator of Clinical Services at Foresterhill Hospitals Unit, Grampian Health Board. He then rejoined the University of Aberdeen as Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine.

His research interests include the investigation and management of renal disease, calcium metabolism as well as the mechanisms of immune regulation of pregnancy and renal transplantation.

Professor Catto is married with a son and a daughter.
