THE SCOTTISH NATION OVERTAKES

HARRY POTTER

Professor Tom Devine’s book The Scottish Nation has held the number one position on the Scottish bestseller list for two weeks, beating Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire in bookshops across Scotland.

For the weeks ending the 11th and 18th of August, The Scottish Nation outstripped the blockbuster J K Rowling book, according to the Top Twenty Scottish Titles Bestseller List compiled by the Scottish Book Marketing Group. The list is compiled to reflect sales in bookshops across the whole of Scotland.

Professor Tom Devine, Director of the Research Institute of Irish & Scottish Studies at the University of Aberdeen said: “This indicates that something important is happening in Scotland, when a serious history book overtakes the international best seller. This would not have happened a few years ago, and it shows a deep and renewed interest in the Scottish identity.”

The Scottish Nation 1700 – 2000 is published by Penguin Books.
