Aberdeen University receives European Social Fund support of £2.53million

European Social Fund (ESF) support of £2.53million has been awarded to the University of Aberdeen.

Two types of projects are being funded, the first of which is postgraduate training for unemployed people, the second the development and delivery of online learning in project management and technology management, which are designed for the oil and gas, amongst other, industries.

ESF provides funding to improve employment opportunities, prevent unemployment, promote equal opportunities and lifelong learning, and to develop entrepreneurship.

Principal C Duncan Rice said that he was delighted with the award.

“This funding goes a long way to helping those interested in expanding their vocational training at a time in their lives when they perhaps would not have been able to undertake such study,” he said.

“By giving these students the tools by which to secure future employment we are, in the long run, benefiting the Scottish economy.”

Training opportunities are available in Agriculture and Forestry; Ecology; Ergonomics; Environmental Microbiology; Environmental Remote Sensing; Environmental Science; Information Technology; Land Economy; Management/Entrepreneurship; Marine and Fisheries Science, Petroleum Engineering: Rural and Regional Resources Planning; Safety Engineering and Soil Science.

Recruitment is now underway for the training opportunities, which are available in both February and September 2001. A stand will be located in Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Shopping Centre all day on Saturday, January 20. Anyone interested will be able to obtain more information there.
