Over 100 pupils from the Gordon Primary School, Huntly, will be visiting The Robert Gordon University, the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen College on Monday 19th March 2001, as part of the 3sixty? University for Children and Communities (UCC) initiative.
The children, all from Primary 6 and Primary 7, will be able to take part in a range of activities from radio broadcasting to making cakes at locations across the city.
Various schools and departments from each of the institutions will be involved in what promises to be an educational and enlightening day for the children. The School of Health Sciences at The Robert Gordon University will be presenting talks on Exercise and Your Body and Sensory Evaluation, while the School of Nursing and Midwifery will be considering Skeletons and Your Body.
Experts at the School of Pharmacy at RGU will also be looking at Your Body, and Professor Henry Ellington from the University’s Centre for Learning and Assessment will be presenting A Guided Tour to the Universe.
Staff from Aberdeen College will be explaining Radio Broadcasting and Digital Photography and Making Cakes to the children while the University of Aberdeen will be welcoming them to the Marischal Museum, where they will learn about Roman life and be able to touch 2000 year old Roman artefacts, and King’s College Chapel, adding a historical aspect to the day’s proceedings.
Professor Norman Deans, Head of the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at RGU and Chairman of the North Forum for widening participation in higher education, said: ‘One of the aims of the 3sixty? project is to work with the further and higher education institutions to complement the work of schools and to show young people the excitement and value of learning. Today’s event is one of a series that we have planned over the next few months that involve school children coming into the institutions to work on projects and interact with academic staff and students.’
