Local engineering firm sponsors Aberdeen students

Two fourth year engineering students at the University of Aberdeen are the first recipients of the newly established ELMAR scholarships.

Runi Joensen (24), from the Faroe Islands, and Portia Pirie (21), of Aberdeen, who are currently on a 5-year MEng degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, have each received £1,000 and an offer of employment during the summer vacation from the Westhill-based company ELMAR.

Professor Rodger, Head of the Engineering Department at Aberdeen University, said that scholarship schemes are an excellent way for students to gain valuable industrial experience during the course of their undergraduate studies and for employers to attract good engineering graduates. This is particularly important at a time when there is very high demand for engineering graduates, especially within the offshore engineering sector.

Executive Chairman of ELMAR, Tom Speakman said: “ELMAR’s future growth and success depend on its ability to attract the best graduates. I am therefore very pleased that this link to Aberdeen University’s Engineering Department has been established.”

With two scholarships awarded this year, it is expected that a greater number of scholarships will be awarded in future years, each worth £1,500 over the full academic year, plus the offer of vacation employment.
