An Open Day with a difference

An Open Day with a difference

The University will be holding its second University-wide pre-application Open Day on August 28, 2001, following on the success of last year’s event.

The aim of the Open Day is to provide an opportunity for prospective students to find out more about what the University has to offer. Parents, teachers and friends are also welcome.

“The students really enjoy visiting the campus and are impressed with the breadth of our degree programmes and the choices on offer. Our student employability rate is impressive - 97% of Aberdeen graduates go into work or further study within six months. They will find out for themselves how successful our graduates are and the better jobs they can get as a result of studying at Aberdeen.”

The Open Day will begin in the evening of August 27 with a party in the Students’ Union for the prospective students and a reception for staff and parents. The 28th will start with registration and a Welcome Talk, students can then move on to one of many presentations on general interest topics that will be given throughout the day as well as ones on specific subjects.

Each department will have an Information Stand where visitors can learn about the subjects available and speak to lecturers and most departments are also opening their doors with tours and exhibitions. In addition, the student support services will also have a strong presence, city tours will run all day and Student Ambassadors will be showing visitors around campus.

One hundred student ambassadors will be on hand to make the day a memorable one. All of the Ambassadors are students at the University of Aberdeen and they will be able to guide visitors, answer their questions, tell them about the campus and generally make them feel welcome.

The Medical Faculty will also play a full role in the Open Day. Their programme will take place at the Foresterhill campus and will include general information on the University as well as interactive demonstrations at the Clinical Skills Centre and advice on the admissions process to the Medical School.

The University of Aberdeen remains at the top in the UK, with a 16.9% increase in the number of applications for September 2001 entry. The huge increase in applications puts Aberdeen in second place in the whole of the UK behind St Andrews University. The figures were issued recently by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS).
