A new course, the first of its kind in the world, will be officially launched by the University of Aberdeen during Offshore Europe week. The M.Sc. in Hydrocarbon Enterprise will be launched on Wednesday, September 5 at Stand 508, by Principal C Duncan Rice, who will be joined by Larry Kinch, Chief Executive Officer of WellDynamics, and the Course Director, Dr Bryan Cronin.
The brand new M.Sc. in Hydrocarbon Enterprise, starting in September 2001, has been sponsored by the Larry Kinch Foundation.
Principal C Duncan Rice, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Larry Kinch for his generous funding to the University for this new course. This new M.Sc. will prove to be one of the most exciting cross-faculty taught business and technology courses in the world.
“It is an international first, catering to a wide range of individuals, from national oil companies and energy ministries, to students with geoscience, law, engineering and economics backgrounds, or anyone who wants world-class accelerated learning in all aspects of the oil industry.
"I am delighted that Larry Kinch will be giving some guest lectures to the course students throughout the year.”
Students will be exposed to all areas of international oil and gas exploration and production. Course units will be delivered by University staff, all with extensive industry experience, as well as by a range of external professionals involved in leading-edge areas of the global oil and gas industry. These professionals frequently use the presentation material for training courses given to industry. Under direction, this broad team, representing all sectors of the oil industry, will produce a leading course that draws directly from the city that surrounds our University, a city that is one of the main oil capitals in the world.
This new course will provide broad training in oil industry matters, particularly in those pertaining to how relatively small oil companies can work with national oil companies to better exploit their hydrocarbon resources. Training in commercialisation, economics and law will be key areas of focus, as will the question of how science and technology can be applied at the cutting edge to improve hydrocarbon exploration success and recovery.
The target audiences will be geologists, engineers and business managers working in national oil companies and Energy Ministries but the course would equally appeal to British and international graduates and professionals seeking to increase their knowledge, skills and qualifications.
The course will aim to develop the conceptual and empirical knowledge, analytical skills and understanding of the business development process in the oil and gas industry. The M.Sc, will encompass modules in the latest technology in geology, geophysical disciplines and Engineering disciplines. It will also include entrepreneurship, negotiating and presentation skills, petroleum economics, accountancy, safety engineering and environmental sciences.
The emphasis will be on practical application of studies, lateral thinking and management techniques. Prior to the first half session, the University will offer pre-sessional courses in English Portuguese, French or Spanish (including report-writing and presentation skills).
The first half-session will cover science and technology issues of hydrocarbon commercialisation, and the second half session will focus on economics, politics, law and communication. It will conclude with project work conducted over the second 6-month period.
