Psychologists Professor Rhona Flin and Margaret Crichton of Aberdeen’s Industrial Psychology Group will demonstrate how incident commanders from OIM’s to police chiefs and nuclear plant managers can be trained to deal with emergencies using Tactical Decision Games during the Ten O'Clock Talk entitled "Sitting in the Hot Seat".
As crises or emergencies occur unexpectedly and without warning, the non-technical skills of the emergency response personnel are as crucial as their technical skills. This is particularly true in complex, large-scale organisations, where emergency response organisations (EROs) often consist of a multi-person system, with different people and teams having important roles to play in the successful management of an incident.
Such circumstances create high psychological demands, with people working under time pressure and stressful conditions. Decision making in emergency situations requires training to increase overall skill levels, to give trainees the experience of decision making under stress or by exposing them to stress, and to enhance skills that are particularly vulnerable.
Margaret Crichton of Aberdeen’s Industrial Psychology Group said: "We believe that Tactical Decision Games (TDGs) may provide a simple but effective supplementary training technique. TDGs are a novel, low-fidelity, low-cost, facilitated training method designed to enhance the non-technical skills required for emergency management. "
She continued: "It is suggested that the development, introduction and use of TDGs, in terms of their adaptability and flexibility, can assist improved incident management through increased knowledge and understanding of tactical concepts, techniques, development of a repertoire of situations, and development of implicit understanding. Repeated exposure to TDGs should assist ERO personnel to be better prepared, more equipped, and more able to deal with the demands endemic in any incident response situation."
