Law for all times: The work and contribution of David Daube
The first of the CMS Cameron McKenna Lecture will take place at the University of Aberdeen tomorrow (Friday November 2). International legal firm CMS Cameron McKenna, which has offices in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, is sponsoring this series of lectures at the University. Each lecture, by a distinguished jurist, is dedicated to a person, associated with Law at Aberdeen, who has made a significant contribution as a jurist or practitioner.
The first lecture in the series is dedicated to David Daube, Professor of Jurisprudence, University of Aberdeen (1951-55) and will cover Law for all times: the work and contribution of David Daube. Professor Daube was one of the greatest scholars of Roman and Biblical law of the last century.
The Rt Hon Lord Rodger of Earlsferry, until recently Lord President of the Court of Session, now a Lord of Appeal, will give the first lecture in this series. Lord Rodger is an Honorary Professor of Law at Aberdeen and holds an honorary LLD degree from the University. The Rt Hon Lord Hope of Craighead, a former Lord President and now a Lord of Appeal, and also an honorary LLD of Aberdeen, will chair this lecture which has been organised and hosted by the Aberdeen Law School’s Centre for the Study of the Civil Law Tradition.
Guests at the CMS Cameron McKenna lecture will include the late David Daube’s three sons – two from the USA, one from Australia – and other members of the Daube family. Distinguished Romanists and legal historians from Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and the USA will also be present. British scholars from Cambridge, Oxford, London, Exeter, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Strathclyde and Aberdeen are participating.
The lecture will take place at the King’s College Conference Centre Auditorium, University of Aberdeen, on Friday November 2, at 6.00pm. All interested persons are warmly invited to attend and should contact Professor David L Carey Miller, School of Law, Taylor Building, Aberdeen, telephone: (01224) 272441, fax: (01224) 272442; or email: dcm@abdn.ac.uk
