Aberdeen University Boat Club was proclaimed victors in the seventh annual City of Aberdeen Universities Boat Race which took place at 3.45pm on Saturday afternoon (March 2, 2002) on the River Dee.
After a closely contested race, Aberdeen University pulled ahead from the Robert Gordon University crew to win the race by two and a half lengths, setting a record time of eight minutes and four seconds to bring home the sought after trophy commissioned by the race’s sponsor Aberdeen Asset Management.
Tom Hannah, AUBC Captain, collected the prestigious trophy from Brad Crombie of Aberdeen Asset Management and former President of the University of Cambridge Boat Club.
In addition to the trophy, both teams received cash sums to be spent as agreed by each team.
Sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, who also sponsor the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race, the Aberdeen race is the longest running Universities’ Boat Race North of the border, having taken place consecutively over the past seven years.
