University Challenge

(Photo Opportunity: Monday, March 11, at 2.00pm, outside the Priory Nightclub, Belmont Street)

The University of Aberdeen will meet face to face with The Robert Gordon University (RGU) for a series of sporting events during the Guinness Granite City Challenge Day on March 13, 2002. The challenge day will consist of more than 24 sporting events with clubs and societies from each university competing in a range of sports from archery to football, and underwater hockey to climbing.

As a prelude to the day, which promises to be the most closely contested in the competition’s six year history, the University of Aberdeen and RGU teams will meet to formally throw down the gauntlet at a photo opportunity which has been arranged for today. Both teams will be joined by the respective Principals from both universities – Professor C Duncan Rice, the University of Aberdeen, and Professor Bill Stevely, RGU. The teams will meet outside the Priory Nightclub on Belmont Street, Aberdeen, at 2.00pm on Monday, March 11. Members of the media are welcome to attend and interview the teams and/or send a photographer.

Commenting on the event, Professor C Duncan Rice, said: “It is wonderful to be part of the Guinness Granite City Challenge, which is now in its sixth year, and like the Boat Race is a fantastic event for the students, the universities and the City.

“Having won the event every year for the last five, the University of Aberdeen will naturally want to win again this year. However, while it is a competitive event, regardless of whoever wins, it is a great sporting event that brings the two university communities together.”

This year will also see the inaugural presentations of the new Guinness Awards. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Sportsman, Best Sportswoman, and Outstanding Fair Play.

In addition to the prize shield being presented to the winning university, there will be individual trophies for the winners in each individual sport.

The day’s events will be rounded off with a buffet, a trophy-giving presentation, and a party for all competitors and spectators at the Priory Nightclub. Dr Adrian Graves, RGU’s University Secretary, will be one of the special guests at the presentation, where Guinness will be offering a variety of drinks promotions.
