University of Aberdeen Sporting Champions to run North-east leg of The Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay

The Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay

Sporting Champions from the University of Aberdeen will take part in the North-east stretch of The Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay on Monday June 10.

The Baton, containing The Queen's Message to be read at the Opening Ceremony of the XVII Commonwealth Games in Manchester, will on June 10 day 5 of the Scotland tour, race from Inverness to Aberdeen.

University of Aberdeen student Rachel Rennie, member of the Scottish Badminton junior squad, will run the Mains of Drum leg. Students Paul Stevenson Captain of the University Curling Club and former World Junior No.4 and Douglas Anderson, selected for the Scottish senior men hockey squad, will run the Peterculter leg. The Baton will also be passed to Aberdeen University graduate Tracey Robb on the Peterculter leg. Tracey has been the No.1 Scottish Hockey goalkeeper for over 10 years and has been to two Olympic games with Great Britain. Tracey will again be competing this year at the Commonwealth games. All physical preparation for these athletes has been managed and supervised by the staff of Sport & Recreation Services at the University of Aberdeen.

Fraser McGlynn, Director of Sport & Recreation Services said "It is a great honour for the University to have such a strong connection with these athletes, and the invitation to carry the Commonwealth baton is just reward for the commitment that these talented performers show towards to their chosen sports."

The Baton has already travelled almost 59,000 miles across the Commonwealth visiting 23 Commonwealth countries over 87 days and returned to the United Kingdom on 6 June marking the start of a 50 day UK tour.
