Pupils to get sneak preview of medical exhibits to be showcased at University's Open Day

Two senior pupils from Hazlehead Academy will, this afternoon (Tuesday, August 20), be given an opportunity to preview some of the medical exhibits which will be on display at the University of Aberdeen's Open Day next week.

Aberdeen will be holding its third University-wide pre-application Open Day on Tuesday, August 27, following on from the success of last year's event.

An exciting programme has been devised, relating to the theme, Innovation - Building on a History of Excellence. Departments will be opening their doors with tours, exhibitions and lectures. Visitors will be able to learn more about the 600+ first degree programmes the University of Aberdeen offers and will also have the opportunity to speak to lecturers. In addition, student support services will talk about clubs, societies and other types of support available to students. Student Ambassadors will show visitors around the campus throughout the day.

The Medical Faculty at Foresterhill will have an interesting programme, which will include interactive demonstrations at the Grampian Clinical Skills Centre, Foresterhill. Louise Pittendrigh and James Stephen, both 16 year old pupils from Hazlehead Academy, have registered and will be attending the University's Open Day. They have both planned to visit the Medical Faculty to find out more about medicine as a career and what life as a doctor is like.

Louise said: "I am really looking forward to attending the University's Open Day - to learn about what Aberdeen has to offer and to get a taste of what university life will be like. In particular, I am interested in getting information about the medical programmes the University provides. I have registered to tour some of the departments and will take the opportunity to talk to the University's staff and students about the medical curriculum."

Director of Marketing, Lori Manders, said: "We anticipate over 3,000 visitors will visit, some from as far afield as Japan and Italy. The vast majority of visitors will be 6th year pupils yet to apply for university. However, anyone with an interest in higher education is welcome and a considerable number will be parents and teachers, and prospective mature students."
