Cutting-edge technology implemented by Student Recruitment and Admissions Service

The Student Recruitment and Admissions Service at the University of Aberdeen has installed new technology which has enabled some exciting new developments. These include a brand new website, student enquiry management system, 360º virtual tours of the University campus, and a webcam at the historic King's College campus.

The Student Recruitment website has been completely restructured and redesigned to encompass lots of new ideas and up-to-the-minute technology, including 360º virtual tours that will enable web users to access the interiors of buildings to have a look around. See www.abdn.ac.uk/sras

David Walton, Chief Technician from the Audio Visual Unit, who played a key role in the new developments, said: "Ipix software creates immersive images placing you in the centre of a spherical screen. You can navigate vertically, horizontally or diagonally and you can zoom in on any part of the image, so you can get a real feel of the fantastic facilities the University has to offer."

The University of Aberdeen will be holding its first Virtual Open Day on Thursday, October 3, 2002, where pupils will be able to find out about the University without having to leave the classroom.

The day will be structured around a programme of monitored chat room sessions with focussed discussions covering a wide range of themes. If pupils are unable to participate in a particular session they can leave questions on a discussion board for a member of staff to answer later.

The new database management system for dealing with all enquiries from potential students provides a complete customer relationship management tool which will enable fast and efficient response to information requests. The system allows for electronic response or response via mail, plus a mix of the two. This tool will also be invaluable for market research purposes. The aim of introducing this new technology is to improve user loyalty and satisfaction.
