The University of Aberdeen is set to host a series of six parents' information evenings throughout Scotland during March. These events provide parents with a valuable opportunity to receive information on various aspects of university life, as well as giving them a chance to air any concerns about their sons or daughters leaving home and entering into higher education.
The first of the six events will take place in Aberdeen on Monday, March 11 from 6.30-8.45pm in the Auditorium at King's College Conference Centre. At each event, refreshments will be served from 6.30pm and the presentations will commence at 7.00pm. Last year's parents' evenings attracted more than 1,000 guests who attended the events in Perth, Inverness, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
The evenings will be introduced by Professor Dominic Houlihan, Vice Principal (Research and Commercialisation) who will provide an overview of the University, followed by specific presentations on important aspects of university life such as finance, accommodation and student support. In addition, the events provide an opportunity for prospective students to accompany their parents and meet with an existing student to get an honest overview of the realities of university life, as well as the chance to learn about the admissions process and student funding.
Deputy Director of Marketing, Clare Gadie, commented: "The transition from school to university can be daunting for parents as well as new students. These evenings provide a way of giving information to parents as well as allowing them the opportunity to ask relevant questions and, where necessary, seek reassurance about concerns they may have.
"We received extremely positive feedback about these evenings last year and are confident that this year's events will be as successful."
A letter of invitation will be sent to the parents of all students who have applied to Aberdeen for September 2003 entry, however anyone requiring further information and/or to book a place at any of the parents' evenings should contact the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office, on (01224) 272090, or email: sras@abdn.ac.uk
