On Sunday, March 23, the University Symphony Orchestra & Choral Society will join forces to pay tribute to respected Aberdonian, Alfie Tough, who died earlier this year. Alfie was a keen singer and a member of the University Chapel Choir and Choral Society and was a well-known figure, particularly in Old Aberdeen.
One of Alfie's favourite works, Mozart's Requiem, will make up the second half of the programme, which will begin with Mozart's Symphony 39 in E flat. Between will be only the second performance in Scotland of the modern Polish composer Lutoslawski's Trois Poemes d'Henri Michaux. This rarely-heard work, which caused a sensation at its premier in Warsaw in 1963, is full of exciting and exotic sounds, with a large chorus and an orchestra with two pianos in its massive percussion section.
This ambitious programme, to be conducted by the Director of University Music, Dr Roger Williams, will be held in The Music Hall on Sunday March 23, beginning at 7.30pm.
Dr Williams said: "I am really looking forward to the concert, with great anticipation. The Mozart Requiem is a masterpiece and the Lutoslawski work will be one of the most exciting works that the University has ever performed."
Tickets for the concert can be purchased from Aberdeen Box Office (Tel: 01224 641122), priced £10.00/£7.50 (concession) and £7.50/£5.00 (concession).
