Professor Catto is this year's guest speaker at the annual Medical Faculty Lecture at the University of Aberdeen and follows last year's thought provoking talk from Lord Robert Winston on 'New Ways to Have Children'.
This week's talk will consider questions such as why, despite the difficulties of recent years, so many young people still consider careers in healthcare and medicine in particular. What changes will higher education need to make to ensure doctors and other healthcare professionals are able to meet the public's expectations of medicine generally? And how can Medical Schools encourage doctors and others to work in different countries and healthcare systems whilst ensuring that patients are protected from incompetent practitioners.
It is anticipated that over 300 people will attend the lecture. University and NHS staff have been invited as well as local secondary school pupils who may have an interest in pursuing a career in medicine or science.
