It is anticipated that principal themes of research will include consideration of the socio-economic impact on modern Scotland, particularly in more remote areas, of in and out migration; the survival of minority languages (in particular Gaelic) and collaborative international research on the same themes. It is hoped that the Centre will attract an international network of scholars interested in migration studies through a new website, seminars, lectures and various electronic media.
Professor Bryan MacGregor, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law has agreed to Chair the Advisory Board with assistance from Dr Aileen Stockdale of the Department of Land Economy and Dr Gillian Munro of Sabhal Mor Ostaig. Professor MacGregor said: "We are delighted to be working with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on this unique project. Although a significant body of research exists which examines the impact of migration on economic development and housing, little has been done on the impact of migration on culture and language change. We look forward to having the opportunity to inform and contribute to important policy initiatives, such as those of Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the new Gaelic development board."
Dr Aileen Stockdale said: "This new initiative is an exciting development in the study of migration in Scotland. Much is known of the consequences of long term rural out-migration, however considerably less is known of the potential offered by contemporary in-migration for the economic and social wellbeing of rural Scotland."
