Around 50 final year secondary school pupils from throughout the North-east will attend a special Chemistry seminar tomorrow (Thursday September 11) at the University of Aberdeen as part of their Advanced Higher studies in the subject.
Around 50 S6 pupils from 12 North-east secondary schools will visit the undergraduate laboratories of the Chemistry Department to carry out a variety of experiments relevant to their Advanced Higher Chemistry Course. The pupils will be using a wide variety of equipment, much of which is unavailable in all schools.
Dr Mary Masson, Senior Teaching Fellow in the Chemistry Department at the University of Aberdeen who has helped organise the visit and will assist participants said: "I am delighted that so many pupils can visit the University and experience at first hand our well equipped Chemistry labs. I hope that we will be able to use the day to demonstrate the exciting nature of Chemistry and help encourage more pupils to consider studying sciences at University."
Tomorrow's Chemistry experiments are taking place as part of the University's S6 Enhancement Unit which aims to support final year school pupils who are studying Advanced Highers in Science and Modern Language subjects. Maggie Eggeling, S6 Enhancement Unit Development Officer, said: "I hope that the young people attending will enjoy the day and learn from their experience whilst at the same time get a flavour of what it is like to study science at University."
