Musical extravaganza at Aberdeen University’s Open Day

One of Scotland’s oldest institutions, the University of Aberdeen, will be holding its fifth University-wide pre-application Open Day tomorrow (Tuesday, August 24) with a packed programme for visitors, which includes live musical entertainment.

Director of External Affairs, Lori Manders, said: “The Open Day is one of the biggest events in the University calendar and we are expecting well over 4,000 visitors, some from as far afield as India and Nigeria. The Open Day is an ideal opportunity for future students to visit and learn about how much the University of Aberdeen has to offer and to get the chance to experience what student life is like.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with staff and students from across the campus. They can also take part in interactive sessions run by a number of Departments, including the Medical School and the Department of Geology and Petroleum Geology.

Musical maestros will entertain the crowds. Two sessions of 'hands-on' music technology will give visitors the chance to create their own electronic composition. The new Aubertin organ will be given a spectacular work-out by University Organist, Dr Roger Williams, in King’s College Chapel with pieces old and new. Throughout the day Raymond and Ronald Jappy will be wandering minstrels playing traditional Scottish music on their fiddles. Ian Milne will also be playing a piano outside Elphinstone Hall. In addition, there will be an introductory talk on the new BMus degree by Peter Stollery, Senior Lecturer and Dr Williams, Director of Music, in the Old Senate Room.

Dr Williams is looking forward to the musical extravaganza planned. He said: “This year we have a packed Music programme for prospective students, parents and visitors to the Open Day. There really will be something for everyone - from creating compositions to course talks, from wandering minstrels to organ recitals. Visitors will also have the opportunity for a hands-on electro-acoustic experience.

“Everyone with an interest in music is invited to come along and find out what is on offer at the University of Aberdeen whether they are interested in studying the subject or just interested in music.”

Robots are the main theme for Computing Science during the Open Day. There will be a number of intelligent robots on display in Elphinstone Hall, and some real and virtual ones within the Department of Computing Science, which is internationally renowned for its research in artificial intelligence and knowledge technologies.
