The University of Aberdeen chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers have been presented with the 2012 Aberdeen Sector award for Outstanding Student Chapter after showing exceptional merit and an admirable level of activity.

Representatives of the Chapter were presented with their award on Monday evening (June 11) by SPE International President Dr. Ganesh C Thakur at the Satrosphere Science Centre in Aberdeen.

This year the Chapter have managed to establish excellent relationship with other student chapters in Scotland and Europe as well as organising ten technical presentations and the First Student Conference which will take place in October 2012.

Vice-President of University of Aberdeen Chapter Nurkenay Bulekbayeva said “We’re absolutely delighted to receive this award. For a relatively new chapter our increase in membership and level of student participation has been really encouraging this year.

“Compared to the previous year, we have certainly created a better reputation for the chapter and established stronger links with the SPE Aberdeen Section.”

Professor Tom O’Donoghue, Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen, said “The SPE Outstanding Student Chapter Award is a fantastic achievement by an excellent group of students and is just reward for their enormous commitment to SPE activities.

“The award is especially welcome given the number of oil and gas-related undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes within the University and the School of Engineering in particular, including the new undergraduate degree in Petroleum Engineering.”

SPE International President Dr. Ganesh C Thakur said “I would like to congratulate the university for being recognized in support of their outstanding efforts during 2012.  I was very pleased with the enthusiasm exhibited by the students, and I would like to encourage them to continue their high standard of achievements.”
