University recognised for world-leading research

Nearly 90% of research undertaken at the University of Aberdeen has been recognised to be of international quality following a UK-wide research review.

The findings come from the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) – a year long independent evaluation of the quality of research undertaken across Britain's universities.

Eleven areas of research at the University were ranked amongst the top 25% in the UK: Health Services Research; Biological Sciences; Agriculture and Food Science; Pure Mathematics; General Engineering; Town and Country Planning; Anthropology; French; English Language and Literature; Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies; and History.

Professor C Duncan Rice, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University said: "We are proud of these strong results, particularly as so many of our competitors are larger than us.

"This is another external measure which validates our strategy of bringing world leading scholars to the University combined with unprecedented investment in our infrastructure."

Professor Dominic Houlihan, Vice Principal Research and Commercialisation, who headed up the RAE submission team at the University, added: "Staff should be extremely proud and are to be commended for their hard work in delivering these results.

"They are evidence that our strategy to place the University of Aberdeen among the world's leading institutions continues to bear fruit."

The RAE results are weighted by the quality of the published work, indicators of esteem and the standard of the environment in which the research was conducted.
