Aberdeen Sports Village, the exciting sports facility currently under construction on the site of the former Chris Anderson Stadium, has received the backing of Aberdeen FC's greatest manager.
Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking as ASV unveiled the organisation's official logo, said: "The Aberdeen Sports Village development is a top class sporting facility that is accessible to the local community in the North of Scotland and beyond, and I've no doubt that it will be a breeding ground for many of the region's sporting stars of the future.
"The area has been crying out for a high quality sports facility for some time and I would urge athletes and sports-minded people from all walks of life to make full use of ASV when it opens next summer."
The state-of-the-art £28 million facility, which is being developed through partnering bodies Aberdeen City Council, the University of Aberdeen and sportscotland, will see a host of sporting amenities previously unavailable and unseen in the North-east.
Included in the complex is a full size indoor football pitch, indoor running straight with throwing and jumping areas, large games hall, squash courts, large fitness suite and performance gym, exercise studios, sports science facilities and dining and conference areas.
The current external running track and football / hockey pitch will be enhanced by a new stand with seating for five hundred.
George Yule, Chairman of Aberdeen Sports Village, believes the facility will revolutionise sport in the area.
"To have all this on our doorstep will enable many of our athletes to receive the training and enjoy the facilities they require without having to spend hours travelling to venues as is currently often the case. It must be remembered also that the facility is not just for those at the top echelons of their chosen sports but very much for the benefit of the community as a whole, irrespective of ability."
Aberdeen Sports Village is scheduled to open next summer, after which it is planned that Phase 2 of the development will commence, culminating in the implementation of additional grass and artificial pitches on the site. At present, discussions are ongoing between the founding partners with regards to Phase 3 which, if it comes to fruition, would herald the inclusion of a much welcomed 50m Olympic sized swimming pool.
