Thousands of international visitors descend on Aberdeen as Open Day launches

Over 5000 visitors from across the globe are expected to descend on the University of Aberdeen today (Tuesday 26 August) as the institute’s annual Open Day event gets underway.

Providing prospective new students with a detailed insight into what life at the University has to offer, the event is aimed at people of all ages looking for information on studying at the University in September 2009.

A host of informative exhibitions, presentations and demonstrations will take place throughout the day alongside campus tours, and an array of live entertainment.

The event will provide visitors with the opportunity to view the University's accommodation facilities including the new four storey accommodation development on the Hillhead Halls Campus.  The project, in partnership with Unite will see an additional 520 en suite rooms added to the array of accommodation options available to students matriculating in September this year.

Parents will also be given the unique opportunity to learn more about what university life has in store for their child at the inaugural Parents' Session.  Designed to provide parents of potential new scholars with an insight into the various aspects of university from finances to accommodation, this is the first time a presentation specifically tailored for parents has been incorporated into the Open Day event.

The Open Day provides a unique occasion for potential new students to experience the institute first hand as Rachel Sandison, Head of Student Recruitment and Admissions, University of Aberdeen explains:  "For those considering entering higher education at the University of Aberdeen, the Open Day provides a crucial opportunity to discover the full spectrum of what student life at the institute has to offer.

"From liaising with key academics on a one to one basis to hearing first hand accounts from current students, the event presents a prime occasion for potential students to gain an in-depth and detailed insight into every different aspect of the University.

"The Open Day provides the ideal opportunity to ask questions and discover more about the range of degree programmes available at the University, helping attendees to make that vital decision on their academic future.  Whilst the eclectic range of events and exhibitions which will be ongoing throughout the day will showcase the broad spectrum of social and cultural activities which make Aberdeen a vibrant and exciting location."
