The University of Aberdeen today (Tuesday 10th June) launches a scheme, enabling new students to enjoy the benefits of their prospective academic life three months early.
From libraries and gyms to computers and cafes, the initiative allows students who will officially begin their degree programme in September 2008, to experience the range of facilities the University has to offer throughout the summer, ahead of their formal matriculation.
Over 100 students who have signed up for the initiative will attend an event held on the King's College Campus today to mark the official launch. Various sessions including campus tours and an introduction to the library and technology facilities, will take place throughout the day to outline the opportunities available to undergraduates.
The initiative is designed to engage students with the University before they commence their studies as Rachel Sandison, Head of Student Recruitment and Admissions, University of Aberdeen explains:
"New students who are about to embark on their university career often spend the summer months highly anticipating both the academic and social aspects of their future lifestyle. The Associate Student Scheme is an extremely unique project which allows students to enjoy the array of facilities and activities which the University of Aberdeen has to offer before they officially matriculate.
"From enabling them to use library facilities to study for exams, access computers and experience the full range of sports equipment and venues which are available, the scheme will provide the new undergraduate entrants with the opportunity to explore, experience and engage with the University campus in advance of the beginning of term time.
"We believe that giving students the chance to get to know the University over the summer months will not only benefit them in terms of their own personal academic and social interests, but ultimately enhance their overall university experience."
The Associate Student Scheme is open to all applicants from the Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire area, who hold a firm offer of acceptance to begin studies in September 2008.
It is hoped that the scheme will be rolled out to include postgraduate students and students from outwith the immediate locality next year.
Rachel Sandison continues: "The University is unique in offering such an initiative, and this is indicative of our commitment to enhancing and developing the experience students enjoy throughout their studies. It is hoped that following a successful first year, we will be able to expand the scheme to involve an even broader section of our student body including postgraduate students and those who are travelling from further afield."
