Plans for north east Subsea Centre of Excellence highlighted at major industry conference

Plans for the development of a new centre of research excellence in subsea technologies in the north east of Scotland will be showcased at a major industry conference in Houston, Texas today (Monday 5 May).

The University of Aberdeen, on behalf of partner organisations, will present the strategy for the new Subsea Centre of Excellence to an audience of key representatives from the oil and gas sector at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

Millions of pounds are being invested into the centre which will support and develop the future needs of the subsea industry by strategically progressing research, skills training and education within this crucial field.

The development of the centre will be a joint venture between industry and academia, with the University of Aberdeen, the Robert Gordon University and Dundee University progressing the initial stages of the venture.  The three universities are working together on the project through the Northern Research Partnership, which aims to establish research of international standing in areas of engineering.

Professor Albert Rodger Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Physical Sciences, University of Aberdeen will deliver a presentation on the opening day of the Offshore Technology Conference, outlining plans for the project.

He says:  "The north east of Scotland has an internationally vibrant subsea sector which is founded on cutting edge technological developments.  This burgeoning field of industry is of vital importance to the national and international economy, and the creation of the new Subsea Centre of Excellence will provide the support and development required to meet the many future challenges and international opportunities in deep and ultra-deep water.

"The Subsea Centre of Excellence will be a genuine partnership between academia and industry, providing a focus for UK Subsea research, education and development.  As the home of the oil and gas industry in the UK, the north east of Scotland is the ideal location to play host to this centre, further reinforcing the position of Aberdeen City and Shire as a global centre of excellence in the subsea industry."

Highly regarded research staff, academics, and industry professionals are currently being recruited for the centre including a new Chair in Subsea Technologies at the University of Aberdeen.

Professor Rodger continues: "Working through the Northern Research Partnership, the three universities have pooled expertise and research strengths to invest in this internationally significant institute.  Involving experts of outstanding ranking from across the sector is integral to the success of the project and the process of recruiting key professionals to facilitate the development and steer the direction of the centre, is currently underway."

The University of Aberdeen presentation will take place at 3.30pm at the Scottish Pavilion booth within the Offshore Technology Conference.
