New degrees to meet demands of booming energy industry

Two new degree programmes have been launched which will boost the number of highly qualified engineers entering the oil and gas sector.

The University of Aberdeen has introduced the Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering Petroleum Engineering degrees, the only programmes of their kind in Scotland, to meet the future demands of the still booming energy industry.

Combining the disciplines of Engineering, Chemistry and Petroleum Geoscience, the degrees will equip students with the tools to confront the cutting edge and complex challenges which will face the sector in the future.

The creation of the programmes is reflective of the University's commitment to working alongside the industry in promoting the region as an international centre of excellence in the exploration and production of oil and gas in the North Sea and around the world.

Professor Albert Rodger, Vice Principal & Head of the College of Physical Sciences says of the programmes: "The oil and gas industry continues to be an extremely buoyant sector and the introduction of these new undergraduate programmes reflect the University of Aberdeen's dedication to developing highly skilled employees in line with increased future demands.

"The first of their kind to be available in Scotland, the programmes are also unique in that they are located in Aberdeen, the heart of the energy sector in Europe. Drawing on the close proximity, strong links and working relationships which the University has established with leading organisations and professionals within the oil and gas industry will be a key objective, providing students with a clear understanding of the technical and commercial challenges facing the sector.

"Ensuring students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to prepare them for direct entry into employment is crucial.  With a growing number of alumni in senior management positions across the industry in Aberdeen, the University has an exemplary track record in delivering top level graduates.  We are confident that the students undertaking these new degree programmes will benefit from the exceptional expertise the University has in this field."

The first group of students for the new programmes will enrol in September 2008.  The degrees will be accredited as part of the portfolio of programmes offered by the School of Engineering.
