Rector electioneering gets underway today

Three candidates are vying for the historic post of Rector of the University of Aberdeen.

Stephen Robertson, Dr Martin Ford and Hamish Mackay all hope to take over from the current incumbent Robin Harper MSP who steps down from his role on June 30.

Electioneering got underway today.

Stephen Robertson MBE is famed for being part of the Doric comic act Scotland the What? – whose members were recently granted Freedom of the City of Aberdeen.

Mr Robertson met his comedy partners when all three were students at the University of Aberdeen.  They debuted at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1969 and retired after their final performance at His Majesty's Theatre Aberdeen in 1995.

Dr Martin Ford is a plant ecologist who studied at Newcastle, Swansea and Cambridge Universities before moving to the North east in 1988 to work for the Scottish Agricultural College.

Since 1999, Dr Ford has been a member of Aberdeenshire Council and has chaired various council committees. He lives near Fintray with his wife Gina.

Hamish Mackay is a freelance journalist and community worker who lives in Seaton in Aberdeen. A native of Caithness, he is a former news editor of the Press and Journal.

He is involved with Old Aberdeen Community Council and serves with various organisations dedicated to voluntary community activities. He is married with two sons.

Voting for the Rector will take place between May 6 and 8 and the result will be announced on May 8.
