International finance experts speak at Aberdeen conference

Three distinguished international finance experts will take part in a conference in Aberdeen today (Monday 28th April).

Kings Conference CentreOrganised by the University of Aberdeen, the Postgraduate Finance Symposium will see presentations from Dr Andreas Humpe, Portfolio Manager in European Equities with Lazard Asset Management; Colin Melvin, Chief Executive Officer of Hermes Equity Ownership Services Ltd; and Colin Welsh, Chief Executive Officer of Simmons & company International. 

From portfolio management to mergers and acquisitions and pensions, the half day event will give an insight into a wide range of financial issues and concepts which are key concerns in contemporary society. 

Professor Patricia Fraser, Aberdeen Asset Management Professor of Finance and Investment Management at the University of Aberdeen says of the event: "The conference will cover a diverse spectrum of subjects within the field of finance.  The aim is to merge theory with practice, allowing our postgraduate students to realise the links between the financial issues and concepts they are studying as part of their degree, and real life scenarios. 

The University of Aberdeen offers a range of postgraduate degrees in finance covering subjects including accounting and finance, investment management, corporate, and real estate finance. 

Professor Fraser continues: "Offering our students the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge through learning from authentic scenarios and renowned experts is a key objective. 

"The three conference speakers are highly regarding as leading experts within the professional finance community, and it is a great honour to host them at the University for this event."

Dr Andreas Humpe is a Portfolio Manager in European Equities with Lazard Asset Management based in Frankfurt.  Dr Humpe manages industrial funds for his client base, and will draw on his experience in his presentation entitled: "Theoretical finance in practice".

Colin Melvin is Chief Executive Officer of Hermes Equity Ownership Services Ltd, based in London. Mr Melvin is involved in providing advice and assistance to pension funds and other institutional investors in the areas of responsible investment, corporate governance, voting and engagement on assets managed by third party fund managers.   Mr Melvin will deliver a presentation entitled "Speculators or stewards? – universal ownership, corporate responsibility and the changing views of the world's largest shareholders".

Colin Welsh is Chief Executive Officer of Simmons & Company International corporate finance division based in Aberdeen and servicing European operations. Simmons & Company International is the only independent investment bank specialising in the energy service industry, assisting clients with the execution and closing of transactions ranging from mergers, divestitures and acquisitions, to debt and equity financings.   Mr Welsh will reflect on his career to date and offer insights into the future in his talk which is entitled: "A lifetime of bad golf".

The Postgraduate Finance Symposium will take place at the Kings Conference Centre Auditorium today (Monday 28 April) at 2.45pm.  Admission to the event is free and tickets are available from the Graduate Business School office.  University of Aberdeen staff and students are welcome to attend.
