The University of Aberdeen is once again hosting the annual Overview of the Oil and Gas Industry this week for those wishing to gain a greater understanding of the issues and activities of the offshore industry (April 1–3).
This is the 15th year that the event has been held, designed to provide non-technical staff or those in support roles with a basic knowledge of offshore field development activities from licensing through to decommissioning and the external regulatory and economic influences.
The event has been renamed to Overview of the Energy Industries to reflect the combination of oil and gas and renewable energies and their joint role in sustaining future energy supplies.
In line with last year, the University is looking to the future and is hosting an additional day to explain in some detail the Renewable Energy Industry and the direction in which this area of energy industry is moving towards. This year the second and third day will be linked by a session discussing the impacts and response to climate change by the energy industries.
Key industry specialists who are experts in their respective fields, will be speaking at the event. Senior representatives from some of the major oil operating and service companies, academia, and trade associations and government representatives will be bringing their knowledge to the event and will put into context the future sustainability of the UK oil and gas industry. They will be joined by representatives involved in the development of the renewable industry.
John Wils, who is chairing the oil overview section at the event said: "Over the years, this unique annual event has provided non-technical professionals and those in support roles with the opportunity to learn from experienced managers of various disciplines.
"We have continually updated the programme to reflect the increasing technical challenges to locate and extract the remaining reserves from our offshore fields. Changing government policies and regulations will also be addressed together with the importance of the industry from an international perspective.
"This is an excellent opportunity for delegates to increase their knowledge to participate in sustaining this vital industry whilst our energy needs are progressively replaced by alternative energy sources. The introduction of a third day which is being presented by leaders in renewable energy supplies further demonstrates this essential progression."
Iain Todd, Renewables Champion with Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), who is chairing the renewables energy day, said: "The addition of a renewables day to the long-established 'Introduction to oil and gas' makes this an unmissable event for anyone wishing to get in touch with the important issues facing the energy sector today. Speakers on renewables will be covering the policies, the technologies, and the business opportunities in a sector which is growing at a remarkable rate, and is seldom out of the news."
The training event will take place at King's College Conference Centre, University of Aberdeen, from Tuesday 1 to Thursday 3 April, 2008. Delegates can register for the full three-day event or either of the Oil and Gas days or just the Renewable Energy day.
