Dress to impress at Careers Week 2008

Careers Week 2008 at Aberdeen

A range of talks, seminars, events and workshops – including how to dress to impress – will take place at the University of Aberdeen next month as part of Careers Week 2008 (February 18-22).

The event aims to increase students' knowledge of graduate positions, employers and the skills required in the workplace.

This year three career areas – media, green, and 'not for profit careers' – will be highlighted in a series of talks. Speakers already confirmed include:

  • Media: Fiona Stalker (BBC); Donald John McDonald (STV); Emma Christie (Press and Journal)
  • Green: David Rodger (Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group); Sarah Thomson (Subsea 7); Susanne Pope (Business Environmental Partnership)
  • Not for profit: Malcolm Fleming (Oxfam in Scotland); Fraser Lovie (University of Aberdeen); Shona Martin (Primary teacher); Melanie Stone (Social worker); Jay Wardrop (Community Education)

A range of workshops have also been arranged, including CV and covering letter makeovers; how to shine at interviews; and psychometric testing made easy. Students can register online at the Careers Service website www.abdn.ac.uk/careers/, by phone on 01224 273601 or by dropping into the Careers office.

Two other special ticketed events will also take place: 'Your future in the North-east' and 'Dress to Impress'.

"Approximately 50 per cent of Aberdeen students stay on in the North-east following graduation," explained Careers Week organiser Laura Ewen.  "The first evening, run with our Alumni office, will bring together local employers, recent graduates from local industry, Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce and the Junior Chamber International (Aberdeen) with third and fourth year students to learn more about the graduate job market."

She said that it would offer students a chance to speed network and find out how the Alumni office can assist them after graduation.

"We're also running a new kind of event for this year's Careers Week, 'Dress to Impress'  which will feature advice and guidance from style consultant Anne Crozier on individual appearance and how best to present yourself at interviews and beyond. Research shows that image matters.  About 55 per cent of the impact we make depends on how we look behave, 38 per cent on how we speak and only 7 per cent on what we actually say."

The 'Your future' event is targeted specifically towards 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students with the 'Dress to impress' event open to all.

The Careers Service is keen to hear from companies and organisations interested in raising their profile around campus.  There are a number of sponsorship opportunities available and other ways of making your firm known to over 14,000 University of Aberdeen students.  To discuss these opportunities further, please contact either Janice Montgomery at href="mailto:j.montgomery@abdn.ac.uk">j.montgomery@abdn.ac.uk</a>, Laura Ewen at href="mailto:l.ewen@abdn.ac.uk">l.ewen@abdn.ac.uk</a> or contact the Careers Service on 01224 273 601.
