A new book that brings together the archaeology, history and geography of Donside will be officially launched at Marischal Museum today (Tuesday, Nov 13).
Axes and arrowheads will be the backdrop when the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) launch their new joint publication, In the Shadow of Bennachie: a field archaeology of Donside, Aberdeenshire.
The culmination of twelve years of fieldwork and research, the richly illustrated volume uncovers Donside's remarkable past and the way it has shaped the modern landscape.
Many of the ancient artefacts from the sites discussed in the book are on display in Marischal Museum, including beakers, bronze and stone axes and arrowheads.
The evening will begin with a drinks reception at 5pm, followed by introductions to the project and its publication by Commissioners and staff of the RCAHMS.
In the Shadow of Bennachie will be available to purchase at the book launch. It can also be purchased later in the evening at the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland lecture by Ian A G Shepherd, an Aberdeenshire archaeologist.
Entitled '…for the more decent bureing of defunct persons' – the Aberdeenshire Historic Kirkyards Project, the lecture will be held in Marischal Museum at 7:30pm. It is part of a regular series of lectures hosted by the museum. For more information visit http://www.abdn.ac.uk/museum/lectures.shtml
