Students stand to improve their career prospects and future earning potential by attending a new Postgraduate Open Day which is being held next week at the University of Aberdeen.
The Institution will hold its first University wide Postgraduate Open Day on Wednesday, November 14, at Elphinstone Hall, Old Aberdeen Campus from 1.00 – 7.00pm.
Research by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) has indicated that graduates with a Masters qualification earn around 32% more as a starting salary than graduates with a first degree alone.
Prospective postgraduate students will be able to talk to academics and support staff about the extensive research and taught postgraduate opportunities at the University. The Open Day will also feature talks on topics such as postgraduate funding; benefits of postgraduate study and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) study.
The event will also be of interest to the local business community who are interested in the latest research coming out of the University, and in staff development opportunities.
Lesley MacLennan, Open Day Coordinator said: "This is our first University-wide Postgraduate Open Day and it will be a fantastic opportunity for people to come and find out exactly what we have to offer from postgraduate Masters to PhDs as well as continuing professional development.
"It will be interesting not only for current students, but also for professionals who are thinking about continuing their studies. We'll have academics and current students on hand to speak to our visitors and give them advice, guidance and a real insight into what postgraduate study will entail.
"We have had a huge response from people interested in coming along on the day and we hope to have a few hundred visitors turn up to the campus."
Representatives from the fields of Medical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Psychology, Engineering, Geology and Petroleum Geology, Geography and Environment, Computing Science, Mathematical Science, Physics, Chemistry, Law, Business, Language & Literature, Social Science, Education and Divinity, History and Philosophy will be present at the event along with Student Support staff, the Careers Service and the Students Association.
Tours of the historic Old Aberdeen campus will be available throughout the day.
The University has also announced that a 20% loyalty discount will be offered to current Aberdeen undergraduate students and Alumni looking to undertake postgraduate study in 2008/2009. The discount will apply to students taking a full-time one year Masters programme or cover the first year of PhD study. The announcement comes following the University's surge up 58 places in the Times Higher World University Rankings to reach 137th spot.
